Doesn’t it feel like all we talk about these days is AI? It tops every agenda now – from Davos to Dayton. Yes, we need to take it seriously and prepare: jobs will go away and many more will change – but how? As technology does more of the work on our behalf – for better or worse – distinctly human capabilities like creativity, critical thinking, clarity of expression, and caring for human experience will increasingly become the “hard” skills. Are we ready? Thanks to Michael Elliott and Emily Cameron Griffen for having me back to Amherst College (seriously, twist my arm…) to share a perspective on how a Liberal Arts education will prepare today's students for leadership in the future – in careers, yes – and also in life and as citizens of an increasingly complex society.

Thank you Houston Christian University Candace Desrosiers Mon'Sher Spencer Michael Basquez for the opportunity to speak to our new #Huskies at the sacred BEANIE CEREMONY! I remember this ceremony from my freshman year vividly…. Beanies followed by getting beaten by the upper classmen at the annual tug of war in Holcombe Mall.I shared some of my experiences both during and after HCU, followed by 3 principles I’ve learned since attending the university but WISH I knew when I started school:1. Change is Inevitable: Embrace a Growth Mindset - With the change, unfamiliarity, and newness of starting something new like attending a university, change is exciting AND unnerving. Lean into the newness and embrace curiosity through a growth mindset (per Carol Dweck). Staying humble and curious keeps us open to learn and appreciate new experiences, people, and ideas. 2. Make friends with EVERYONE - This is one of the best times in your life to meet, work with, and learn from people from all walks of life. There’s no better place to build friendships that you’ll keep for a lifetime. In addition to that, remember that your network is your net worth: the person sitting next to you just might help you find a job one day!3. Remember your WHY - It’s easy to get burned out when you’re lost in the minutia of “what:” assignments, homework, exams, extracurriculars, job. Press on by staying connected to your “why.” Why=OTHERS. The point of learning ANYTHING is NOT to become the most actualized version of yourself, to be smart, to be fabulous; the point of learning of anything is to have SOMETHING OF VALUE to offer to others. People=words in sentences. Just like words require other words, sentences, and paragraphs for context and meaning, we have meaning and purpose by offering our gifts and abilities in the service and “context” of others. Welcome to our new Huskies! Dawgs Up! 🤘 #alumni #speaker #freshmen #careeradvice #hcu

This week we are shining the#AlumniThenAndNowSpotlight on Chris Davila from the Queen of Peace Class of 2005! Today, Chris uses her knowledge and skills working in Marketing, PR, and Event Production on brands like Red Bull, Jack Daniel's, Travelpayouts, Sportfive. She is also the Founder of a Latina Travel Blog, Girl Takes Mundo 🌎✨💙What was DMSF’s impact on you?💛 Thanks to the DMSF scholarship, I felt I had the support of an organization that believed in my potential and provided me with the tools to succeed during my formative years. I saw this even in simple aspects, like maintaining a minimum GPA to keep the scholarship. I found myself exceeding that goal even in my university years. I also gained valuable public speaking skills from the summer bridge program, where we practiced speaking eloquently and comfortably without filler words, addressing peers professionally. The habits instilled through DMSF shaped how I present myself today. Through the high standards DMSF set, I learned that I can rise to challenges when given adequate encouragement and resources. Meeting DMSF’s expectations taught me to believe in my own capabilities. I’m grateful for the work ethic and self-confidence DMSF fostered in me.💙For you, what does it mean to be a Murphy Scholar?💛 To me, being a Murphy Scholar means defying the odds through hard work and self-belief. It means pursuing excellence in education despite financial barriers or early academic struggles. When I failed first grade as an English language learner, it could have set the tone for low expectations seeming inevitable. Being a Murphy Scholar, I was able to continue to prove this simple concept, with the right resources and encouragement one can excel.💙What advice do you have for current Murphy Scholars?💛Keep being yourself no matter what others think. Trust your instincts - you know deep down the path that's right for you.Thank you for encouraging us to work hard and believe in our capabilities!#35YearsOfMurphyScholars#AlumniThen&Now#HighSchoolScholarship#EducationAccess

Sidra Khalid 18G, 40 Under Forty honoree, reflects on her experience as a young college student at Emory, ready to learn what it takes to be successful. “At 20, I was eager to have everything planned out and to know exactly what I needed to do to be successful. Ultimately, I've learned that life rarely follows a linear path, and it's okay not to have everything figured out when you’re younger.”Learn more about our honorees here: https://bit.ly/4c8KPOd
